Om boken

Book Description Focus: Book consists of 30 sessions that teach the core concepts of Windows .NET Server to Windows Administrators over a weekend. Covers the new features of the Windows .NET Server, including headless servers, Remote Desktop Services (RDS), and performance management. Learn how to implement Windows .NET Server as the base OS for the Microsoft .NET Framework and.NET Enterprise Servers, including SQL Server 2000 and Exchange 2000 Server. Covers Windows .NET Server's improvements to networking, Active Directory, usability, reliability, scalability, disaster recovery, management, and Internet integration as well as Windows basics and architecture; installing the Windows .NET Server; and managing server security. Running example: A running example of a fictitious major international bank is used to demonstrate key concepts. Windows interface tutorial on CD: For readers with no prior Windows experience at all, a Windows interface tutorial will be included as an appendix on the CD that accompanies the book. WCC series features: Each session takes 30 minutes to complete. Four time-to-go icons gauge the reader's progress through any given session. "Quiz Yourself" questions (at the end of each session) and "Part Review" questions allow the reader to review what they have just learned. Skill assessment software on the CD-ROM helps readers gauge their skill level before and after reading this book. ABOUT THE CD-ROM The CD-ROM has skills assessment software based on the sessions in the book and an appendix on the Windows interface. ABOUT THE TECHNOLOGY What is it: Windows. NET Server is the foundation for Microsoft's .NET Enterprise servers. It is the follow-on to Windows 2000 Server, Advanced Server and Datacenter Server. It is a customizable base operating system designed for enterprises that need very reliable high-end drivers and software. Windows. NET Server helps maintain a distributed personal computer network. It works optimally in high-traffic computer networks and helps reduce the total cost of ownership (TCO) of maintaining a computer network. Furthermore, Windows.NET Server provides powerful, comprehensive management services that let you build and deploy servers more quickly; configure a network more easily; and work with the Windows-based desktop more easily. The management services include the following: Group Policy, Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI), Windows Script Host (WSH), and Microsoft Management Console (MMC). Finally, the Windows .NET Server allows all organizations to make full use of their current infrastructure. This way, corporate IT groups can introduce new management solutions based on Windows management services, while protecting and preserving their existing investments that may be based on non-Windows computing devices. Compatibility: "The .NET Enterprise Server applications will support .NET Server compatibility in an upcoming beta," said Michael Stephenson, lead product manager with Microsoft's Windows .NET Servers group. He said that "Microsoft's goal is to have all the applications that run on Windows 2000 Servers today also run on the .NET Server." New features and improvements: New features include headless servers, Remote Desktop Services (RDS), and performance management. Network improvements include an easier-to-use Active Directory, usability, reliability, scalability, disaster recovery, management, and Internet integration. Product availability: RTM for the Windows .NET Server is expected March 2002. The final product is expected June/July 2002. The follow-up release to Windows .NET Server is expected in early 2005. Based on this info, this book will have a 30-month shelf life. ABOUT THE AUDIENCE Who the book is for: The book is for Windows Administrators. It assumes no prior knowledge of any Windows Server version. However, it assumes readers are familiar with the basic Windows user interface. For readers with no prior Windows experience, a Windows interface tutorial is included on the CD.
