Guilty: Hollywood's Verdict on Arabs After 9/11

'Nothing will ever be the same again'. This was the sentiment that many Americans expressed after the atrocities of 9/11. But what remains the same, argues Jack Shaheen, is Hollywood's stereotyping of Arabs.In his previous, best-selling book "Reel Bad Arabs" - written before 9/11 - Shaheen showed that Hollywood often equated Arabs and Muslims with violence, and used them as shorthand for the 'enemy.' In "Guilty", he shows that the same stereotypes are still being used. Nearly all of Hollywood's post-9/11 films legitimize the view of Arabs as villainous sheikhs, or murderous terrorists - even when the films themselves have nothing to do with the Middle East.This volume also addresses the cultural issues at play since 9/11, and suggests that winning the 'War on Terror' can only happen when the centuries-old stereotypes of Arabs are shattered.
