The results of an international symposium, arranged by the Department of Archaeology at Lund University in October 2000, with participants from Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Lithuania, Poland and Sweden, are presented in this book. The articles are dealing with the key question of whether the inhabitants of the Baltic Sea region reacted to Europeanization during the Middle Ages through clashes or compromises. As a consequence, both spatial and mental frontiers were built up and identities created. In 24 articles archaeologists, historians and philologists investigate aspects of frontier-building (European, economic, administrative and ecclesiastical frontier) and identity-creation (ethnic, political and symbolic identity). New results concerning the interpretation of material culture and written sources make it possible to draw a more detailed picture of the Baltic Sea area during its greatest period of change in the Middle Ages.
